Personal IT settings (PITS) and how to use passwords
In order to use our services most comfortably, we strongly suggest you to
follow the steps below.
Before using PITS
Install password manager
A password manager makes life both easier, simpler and more secure. Do not learn and do not type
passwords manually, except in the minimally required cases. Use our https://bitwarden.wigner.hu
password management service.
You can use the service two ways, depending on the platform:
- Desktop, laptop: add the bitwarden extension to your favourite browser
- Mobile devices: install the bitwarden app.
Watch the subtitled video (3
min 57 sec) about how to install the bitwarden extension in a firefox
browser. The video shows the next steps:
- Disable the password manager of the browser itself
- The passwords saved earlier can be exported anytime an imported into
bitwarden.
- Install the bitwarden extension and set it to use the https://bitwarden.wigner.hu server.
- Create an account at https://bitwarden.wigner.hu
- Tune the default settings of bitwarden
- Demonstrate its usage at webmail.wigner.hu:
- How to “teach” the identifier and password in bitwarden
- How to use the saved data from bitwarden, without typeing anything.
In other browsers the required steps are similar to install the bitwarden extension.
First login into PITS
You can download the manual of the PITS system (Hungarian only):
Watch the subtitled video (3 min
18 sec) about how to login first time into PITS, relying on bitwarden.
The video shows the next steps:
- Change the language to English before first login, in the menu.
- In order to login first, make the system send a one time login password.
- If when your account was registered an external email address was provided,
your can specify the external email address and the password will be posted there.
- It is unnecessary to save one time passwords in bitwarden.
- Setup your master password
- Logout and then login so that bitwarden can learn the master login password for PITS. Save the login parameters in bitwarden.
- Accept our ISP (Information Security Policy - IBSZ in Hungarian)
- After accepting it all the services of the PITS system become available
- Switch on the currently optional two factor authentication
- Teach the second factor to bitwarden and save it there.
- Demonstrate to login using two factor authentication.
The passwords of the services, login keys
Passwords required for email
Always use your email address from the @wigner.hun-ren.hu or @wigner.hu domains
as identifier in the mailer programs.
- If you use only our webmail.wigner.hu webmail
service:
- Setup your new Email reading password in PITS.
- In another browser tab or window visit the webmail page.
- Use the password copy feature of PITS and copy your new password
into the password field of the webmail login page.
- Save the login parameters in bitwarden.
- After that you’ll never have to type in your indentifer and password
when using the webmail service.
- Watch our subtitled video
(1 min 43 sec) about how to setup 2FA for our webmail services.
- If you use a mailer program:
- Setup your new Email reading password in PITS.
- Setup in PITS that your Email sending password be the same as
your Email reading password.
- Start your mailer program
- You can find guides
in our homepage (in Hungarian but with many screenshots) about how to update
the saved password in a few popular mailer program.
- Use the password copy feature of PITS and copy your new password
into the corresponding password field in your mailer program and save it.
- Do not forget that you have to update both the email reading and the email sending
passwords in your mailer program.
- If copying from the bitwarden app is more comfortable on a mobile device,
save the email sending password in bitwarden in a new entry and use that for copying.
Eduid password
Always use your email address from the @wigner.hun-ren.hu or @wigner.hu domains
as identifier when autenticating to eduid.
- Setup your new eduid password in PITS.
- In another browser tab or window visit any of our eduid protected services
- You can find the list of our eduid authentication based services at the PITS page.
- Use the password copy feature of PITS and copy your new password
into the password field of the idp.wigner.hu identifier service.
- Save the login parameters in bitwarden.
- After that you’ll never have to type in your indentifer and password
when using any of our eduid services.
- Watch our subtitled video
(3 min 6 sec) about how to setup 2FA for our eduid services.
Wifi passwords
Always use your email address from the @wigner.hun-ren.hu or @wigner.hu domains
as identifier in the wifi authentication setups.
Setup your new Wigner wifi password in PITS.
- Your eduid wifi password is by default the same as your Wigner wifi password.
- On Windows systems when setting the wifi password, the Windows system
changes the keyboard layout to the one which was the default in the
installation media of the Windows system. If that is different from
the one which is configured for normal mode (e.g. English-Hungarian)
then it can happen that what you type is not what you think you are
typeing. Use the clipboard to paste in the password instead.
Start your network manager tool on your device
- You can find guides
in our homepage about how to update the saved password
in different network managers.
Use the password copy feature of PITS and copy your new password
into the corresponding password field in the network manager and save it.
If copying from the bitwarden app is more comfortable on a mobile device,
save the wifi password in bitwarden in a new entry and use that for copying.
Please note, you have to configure the identifier at two places:
The domain part after the @ sign must be identical otherwise the wifi authentication will be unsuccessful.
Make sure you have got at least one working network connection in order
to reach the PITS webpage or to sync the passwords in the bitwarden extension of
your browser so that you won’t need to type those.
Unfortunately sometimes it happens that in spite of changing the password only,
the wifi network manager loses some or all of the required wifi authentication
parameter settings. Therefore if the wifi connection does not work after
setting up the new password, then check the wifi parameter settings which
can be found here or simply
download the eduroamCAT tool
which can setup the wifi configurations properly.
Campus VPN password
Always use your email address from the @wigner.hun-ren.hu or @wigner.hu domains
as identifier at using the campus VPN service.
- Setup your new campus VPN password in PITS.
- Download the campus VPN configuration file from the PITS page,
because that is the recent one.
- Save the campus VPN password in bitwarden in a new entry and use that for copying.
SSH keys
Upload your SSH public keys at the corresponding PITS menu, if you want to
use the lxserv.wigner.hu ssh login server. After the migration has completed,
only ssh key logins are accepted at lxserv.wigner.hu, using the keys uploaded in PITS.
The password authentication won’t be supported anymore.
