Összefoglaló:
Mixtures of solid particles and a fluid are common in Nature and industry: sand on the beach is just one example out of many. The mechanical and flow behavior of suspensions contains a number of physics mysteries. We unravel some and discover more mysteries by working with a model suspension, composed of soft, slippery spheres suspended in water. We find that the flow behavior of these suspensions can be set by the external pressure, much like Bridgman discovered the pressure dependent viscosity of Newtonian liquids. Additionally, the boundaries of these suspensions are curiously important in determining its flowability. We will give an overview of recent experimental results and introduce a model that couples the confinement sensitivity and boundary effects.
