The recent meeting of the Nuclear Physics European Collaboration Committee (NuPECC) took place in Hungary. The event was organized by Zsolt Fülöp, a scientific advisor at the ELKH Institute for Nuclear Research (ATOMKI) and György Wolf, the Head of the Theoretical Physics Department at the ELKH Wigner Research Centre for Physics (Wigner RCP). It was held in Debrecen from May 31 to June 1 with the participation of several Hungarian research institutes that play a major role in the field of nuclear physics research.
The primary objective of the international organization NuPECC is to evaluate the status of nuclear physics in Europe and provide recommendations for medium- and long-term advancements to European decision-makers. In pursuit of this goal, approximately every five years, NuPECC releases a publication titled the "Long Range Plan for Nuclear Physics in Europe." With a few exceptions, all EU member states are represented among the members of NuPECC. Furthermore, large-scale facilities such as GANIL (Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds) and FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) also participate in its work. One of the organization's important responsibilities is to promote nuclear physics, with NuPECC providing half of the members and the president of the specialized group called PANS (Public Awareness of Nuclear Sciences). PANS also creates captivating and informative educational materials, in the preparation of which Hungarian experts are also involved. Among the publications released so far, the brochures titled “Nuclear Physics and Medicine” and “Nuclear Physics in Everyday Life” can also be found.
György Wolf represents Hungary in NuPECC. The organization holds three meetings annually, each taking place in a different country. The May meeting was hosted in Debrecen, Hungary. As usual, the hosting country presents itself during the first half-day of the meeting, as did Hungary this time. Following György Wolf's presentation on the domestic nuclear physics situation, researchers from ATOMKI, Eötvös Loránd University, Wigner RCP, and the University of Szeged spoke about the nuclear physics research conducted at their respective institutions.
