Összefoglaló:
The intensity of X-rays scattered by randomly oriented molecules was given by Debye in 1915. The extension of his results to bulk samples (Zernike and Prins, 1926) led to the concept of pair distribution function (PDF), a quantity connecting diffraction data with the microscopic structure of matter. Though it was rediscovered from time to time PDF never played an important role in materials science. The situation changed with the appearance of fast 2D x-ray detectors enabling rapid data collection at synchrotron sources.
In this presentation I will give a brief historical overview of the most important PDF-related experimental methods (X-ray and neutron diffraction). The inherent experimental and theoretical limitations of pair correlation-based description of disordered materials will be discussed. The type and depth of structural information provided by PDF will also be illustrated by examples.
